  • Some people might enjoy this. It has “recipes” for abstract painting, step by step. If the painting examples looked better I might have been more impressed. It will appeal to painters that like exact directions.

  • How-to art books are written to make money. They sell because either they give excellent instruction one can learn from, OR they present their material as a one, two, three, you too can create a lovely painting following these simple instructions, no experience needed!. This book offers “… instructions for 65 abstract paintings that you can get to work on straightway, with no previous experience.” You’d really need to have some experience to understand these very brief instructions. It’s more like a little gallery with some very nice, sophisticated pieces of art.

  • After receiving and drooling over Rethinking Acrylics, this book pales.

No information on how to use today’s modern art products – really very limited. Read my review on ‘Rethinking Acrylics’.

I found this book very limiting even in it’s effort to encourage creativity. Once you have seen the picures – that’s pretty much it.

  • This is way too mechanical for my taste. I would like to know some of the thinking and/or inspiration that drives abstract painting. Instead, I get instruction on the level of, “Divide up the surface with a few random lines. Lay in some colors. Use a few horizontal strokes to add interest.”

Also, it is aimed at acrylic painters. I wish the product description had mentioned the acrylics part. Being a pastel user, many instructions were pretty much useless to me, such as applying paint with a palette knife, letting colors run, scaping away some of the paint, and marking on top with felt tip markers
