  I admit I only made it thru the first 20 minutes of this disaster! It is really awful – fake backdrops (obvious), horrible stilted acting, the language is ridiculous and almost comical, blood flying around in slow motion, etc.
  
  Apparently Starz was attempting to make another “Rome” and it is a miserable failure.
  
  Don’t waste your $$ and time.
  
  How anybody with half of a brain can give this mess 5 stars is beyond me.

  Gratuitous cartoony execution. This show is all about really bad CGI, gratuitous sex, and painfully boring slow-motion fights with buckets of blood. The special effects detract from an otherwise listless story.

  Spartacus Blood and Sand is soft core porn with dialogue that has the F word as every other word. While you’re enjoying that, enjoy wonderful CGI effects like slo-mo decapitations with heads spiraling down a battle field and buckets o’ blood painting half the screen. Honestly, this could’ve be a movie about anything. The plot seems to stay on the back burner while we’re treated to an overabundance of “what sells”.

  The costume design department probably didn’t work overtime on this one, as the girlfriend of the villain looks like half the girls you’d see in a porn movie. What a coincidence that hair styles, accessories, etc were the same today as they were when Caesar was around!

  I didn’t stick around till the end, but I’m guessing it concluded with a lesbian orgy between tattooed girls with eyebrow piercings and tribal tattoos on the small of their back.

  This series definitely had potential, but it catered to the lowest common denominator. Have your tube sock ready for this one if this is your thing, but I recommend this horribly written show to nobody.

  I enjoy a good toga drama along the lines of Gladiator (Widescreen Edition), the HBO Series Rome: The Complete Series or the original Spartacus film starring Kirk Douglas. When I heard about Starz production of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”, I will admit to a little excitement–after all it is not every day that I get to see handsome buff men running around in next to no clothing. Sadly, “Spartacus: Blood & Sand” does not deliver the intellectual buzz along with the soft porn for which many Premier cable channel series have incorporated as trademark.

  The story line offers nothing new: A politically-minded Roman literally throws his newly allied Thracian villagers to the barbarian wolves. When Spartacus & Co. realize that the Roman has no intention of protecting their homes, they desert, hurrying back to their villages to head off the hoard of painted tribesmen intent on burnt offerings. Of course, the crafty Roman doubles back and collects the wayward Thracians and then parades them in chains to Capua, the home of his distinguished father-in-law. Games in the arena are to be provided for the lulling of the masses and the captured Thracians are to be pitted against some of the Empire’s most seasoned champions. In an unintentional parody of the “Are You Not Entertained?” sequence in Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator,’ Spartacus slaughters the group of professionals with some deft moves pumped up with unbelievable and unwarranted gore that nearly splashes in the viewer’s eyes. And a legend is born . . .

  You would think that all that blood, hints of political intrigue and action would have the audience sitting on the edge of its seats. However, instead of tantalizing its viewers, Spartacus: Blood & Sand petrifies them into yawning pillars of sand and not due to looking back at the more than abundant supply of sumptuous body parts including full frontals bent in sexual contortions right out of an illustrated guide of the Karma Sutra. Less is more definitely applies here especially with regard to lascivious language that seems to be the order of the day between husbands and wives, battle comrades and dueling politicians.

  Yuck! The one hour that I watched had me grimacing as buckets of blood slashed and splattered out of slit chests, backs and necks. Most gruesome was the gladiator slithering away on his stomach after his legs had been hacked off his body. UGH! Compliment all this gore with love scenes that could be shown at a bachelor party and you have a full spectrum of the yin and the yang that completely contradicts the idea of balance and good taste on any level.

  Bottom line? I simply was not entertained by Spartacus: Blood and Sand. I don’t recommend it.

  I only watched three episodes. And I wanted to like this series, because the story line certainly draws you in. But unfortunatly, for me at least, the nudity (including male frontal) and the graphic portrayal of sex was a little too much. Of course, this has become the norm for Cable funded shows and it may not bother some people. In my opinion, however, it was so blatant and in your face that it distracted from the story line.
