Mariah Carey is on top of the Billboard charts again but 50 Cent, Bow Wow and Super Mario Bros. are closing in on the No. 1 ranking.

The music industry is becoming more familiar with the latest and most unique chart released by Billboard – the hottest cell phone ringtone downloads.

According to London-based information technology firm LogicaCMG, global revenues from mobile downloads may exceed $9 billion by summer 2006.

An estimated 30 million Americans, who make up 23 percent of global mobile phone owners, have downloaded ringtones, according to Chicago-based marketing research firm Ipsos Insight. Last year, just 5 percent of U.S. users downloaded ringtones.

Ringtone sales generated $300 million in revenue in the United States in 2004, and revenue is projected to top $600 million this year. The average users spends $7.55 a month on mobile downloads with typical charges of $2 to $3 per song.

We knew it was going to be a big opportunity but it’s amazing to see how the market has taken off, said Colleen Lecount, Sprint Nextel product marketing manager for the Kansas City, Mo.-based operational headquarters. Young people use it the most but it’s becoming suitable for everyone of all ages, providing the ultimate personalization.

Hip-hop ringtones accounted for more than half of the $300 million U.S. market in 2004. Fifty-two percent of 12- to 17-year- olds and 49 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds have downloaded ringtones.

They’re better than the regular ringtones, said 17-year-old Cierra Williams, who has set up Carey, Missy Elliot and Bobby Valentino ringtones for her family and friends. They’re more popular and I can put a different ringtone with a different person.

Clemencia Sagastume, 17, used to download between $10 and $15 worth of ringtone songs per month under her old contract but she stopped when her bills hit $65 to $100. Under her new pre-paid T- Mobile account, she spends about $2 per month downloading ringtones from the Goo Goo Dolls, Stone Temple Pilots and Kelly Clarkson.

The ringtone download market has become a three-way war between cell phone companies, third-party Web sites sometimes offering free downloads and music company record labels.

Napster, the music download Web site, has sold more than 100,000 downloads since it began offering ringtones May 9.

Cingular Wireless of Atlanta has royalty revenue share contracts with Napster, Rolling Stone magazine and TheBlingTones.com to provide customer access to more ringtone downloads. Through the Cingular Tone Club, customers can purchase three music tones, six polyphonic ringtones or six graphics for $5.99 a month. Polyphonic tones mimic songs but do not play back the actual lyrics and music.

We work with outside aggregators who manage our third-party ringtone content vendors, said Dawn Betton, Cingular Wireless director of southeast public relations. We do actively audit and filter all content that comes through the aggregator to ensure the ringtones are in line with the Cingular customer experience and strict content policies.

Patrick Kimball, Verizon Wireless spokesman for the Southeast region, said ringtone sound quality has improved over the last couple of years from simple beeps to polyphonic sounds to musical and music video downloads with a much richer sound quality.

Verizon’s Get it Now service offers ringtone downloads from $1 to $3 depending on the song’s date of release.

The music identification service is another Verizon program. Callers put their phone up to the car radio system and the phone relays the name of the song and artist and asks you if you want to buy the ringtone if available.

People are becoming more accustomed to us delivering media to them in ways they haven’t had it before, Kimball said. If you like a song, this gives you a way to make it yours on your cell phone.

Sprint was the first U.S. carrier and Sony BMG Entertainment was the first record label to offer music tones in July 2003. The Sprint Nationwide PCS Network has gold and platinum level status to illustrate the success of music tones. Ringtones by Beyonce Knowles and Usher have gone platinum with more than 1 million downloads while artists like Destiny Child, 50 Cent and Lil’ Flip have exceeded the gold 500,000 download mark.

Some artists will release ringtones for new songs before they release the radio and CD versions, according to Lecount, who said Sprint has record label contracts with EMI, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner and Universal.

Some cell phone companies have royalty contracts with third- party Web sites while others share royalties based on a revenue share deal with music labels. It just depends what route you want to take, said LeCount. There are even some third-party sites who have direct billing for ringtones and stand on their own.

Louis DiVincenti, 19, downloads ringtones from a third-party Web site, 3gforfree.com. He accesses the site from his Sprint cell phone and downloads the ringtones for free. If he accessed the site through his PC, it would cost about $7 a month.

DiVincenti pays $15 monthly for unlimited Internet on his cell phone and downloads about two to three songs a month.

LeCount said she is not surprised people are finding ways to download free ringtones. She has heard of people putting the cell phone up to the radio, recording the song and storing it for ringtone use.

People are always going to find ways around something that costs money but the risk they run into is one virus from an untrusted Web site can do a lot of damage to your cell phone, LeCount said. We feel like we have an advantage as a cell phone provider because we are already trusted by the customer.
