Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates pumilio): This full-grown male poison dart frog is only about 3/4 of an inch long (2 cm)! It lives on the floor of the rain forest, hopping among leaves and up on top of some logs to sing. Here it is singing to a mate or warning some other males off.

These frogs are very good parents. The females lay the eggs inside of leaf-cups made by bromeliad plants. The parents take care of the tadpoles after they hatch, often transporting them to other leaf-cups.

This type of poison dart frog is not too dangerous, but some have toxic chemicals in their skin that are so dangerous they can kill a person. The poison in poison dart frogs is to keep predators from eating them, and the bright colors are to warn a predator that the frog is poisonous.

Poison dart frogs got their names because some native South Americans use their poison to make poisonous darts for hunting. They capture the frogs by using a leaf to pick it up, so the poison doesn’t get on their hands. They rub the tip of the dart in the poisonous mucous of the frog’s skin and the arrow is ready for the blowgun. The particular species of frog they use produces a very strong poison, and the darts are so poisonous that they will kill monkeys and other big animals. (Source: TrekNature)

Red Eyed Tree Frogs have bright red eyes and are a really bright color of green with blue and yellow stripped sides. They also have funny looking orange toes. These are definitely one of the more beautiful species of frogs. Red-eyed tree frogs come from rain forests of Costa Rica in Central America. While lovely creatures and good breeding pets, I really, really recommend that this not be a good pet for beginners! They are pretty expensive and fairly delicate.

Why do they have such bright red eyes? Some believe that it is also a form of protection called “startle coloration”. These frogs tend to be active at night, so if the frog is awakened in the daytime, as might happen if a predator chanced upon it despite its excellent day time camouflage, the eyes pop abruptly open. Since they are suddenly so bright, they startle the predator, who is likely to pause, if only for a moment. Big eyes staring at you could be those of an enemy, poised to attack. A moment’s hesitation would be all the agile tree frog would need to make a leap to safety. Similar ruses are known in other animals. For example, some large moths have equally dramatic eye-like spots of color on their hind wings. Like the frog, they sleep in the day, and the camouflage-colored fore wings cover the eye spots of the hind wings. But if such a moth is disturbed, it slides the front wings forward, suddenly revealing the dramatic eye spots on the hind wings. (Source: All About Frog)

When I was checked my email inbox yesterday, I got this useful advise about our heart. So, I thought it is a good tip for everyone and should be shared among us. It is about a chat with Dr. Devi Shetty, Narayana Hrudayalaya ( Heart Specialist) Bangalore that was arranged by WIPRO for its employees. The transcript of the chat is given below.

What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart ?

Answer:

1. Diet – Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil

2. Exercise – Half an hour’s walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime

3. Quit smoking

4. Control weight

5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?

Answer:

No

It’s still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?

Answer:

This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?

Answer:

Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints .

Answer:

Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Answer:

You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body’s enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?

Answer:

Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Answer:

Yoga helps.

Which is the best and worst food for the heart?

Answer:

Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Answer:

All oils are bad .

What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?

Answer:

Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?

Answer:

Help the person into a sleeping position , place an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.

Question:

How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?

Answer:

Extremely difficult without ECG.

Question:

What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.

Answer:

Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Question:

Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?

Answer:

Yes.

Question:

Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?

Answer:

Yes, consanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child

Question:

Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?

Answer:

When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?

Answer:

Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Answer:

No.

Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?

Answer:

No.

How would you define junk food?

Answer:

Fried food like Kentucky , McDonalds , samosas, and even masala dosas.

You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?

Answer:

Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.

Question:

Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?

Answer:

No.

Question:

Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?

Answer:

Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.

Question:

Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?

Answer:

No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.

Question:

Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?

Answer:

Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.

Question:

Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?

Answer:

Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Question:

What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?

Answer:

Diet, exercise, drugs on time , Control cholesterol, BP, weight.

Question:

Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?

Answer:

No.

Question:

What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs?

Answer:

There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to

reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.

Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?

Answer:

No.

Question:

Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?

Answer:

Nature protects women till the age of 45.

Question:

How can one keep the heart in a good condition?

Answer:

Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for health checkup s if you are past the age of 30 ( once in six months recommended).

KUALA LUMPUR: Part-time singer Stacie Angie Anam beat four other contestants to win the Akademi Fantasia Season Six here last night.

Stacy, 18, as she is known, impressed judges Ning Baizura, Fauziah Datuk Ahmad Daud and Adlin Aman Ramlie with her moving renditions of Atas Nama Cinta and Aku Stacy at the grand finals held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

She took home RM733,734 worth of prizes in cash and in kind, which included a four-room bungalow at A’Famosa Villa D’Lagos, Malacca (RM550,000), a Peugeot 307 XS (RM139,535), RM25,000, holiday packages to South Africa (RM8,000) and New York (RM10,000), a Sony playstation (RM1,199) and a trophy.

Second place went to Mohamed Idris Zaizizi, 32, from Perak, who won RM15,000 and a Naza Bestari (RM68,877), holiday package to South Africa (RM8,000), holiday voucher (RM3,000), and Sony PlayStation (RM1,199) . Third was Ahmad Nubhan Ahmad, 22, from Negri Sembilan, who took home RM10,000 and other gifts.

The fourth placed performer was Khirul Nizam Baharum, 31, from Johor Baru, who won RM5,000 and other gifts, while Nadia Haswani Hasnan, 18, from Kuala Lumpur was placed fifth.

Hosted by A.C. Mizal, the three-hour show before a packed audience at the 6,000-seat stadium saw each of the five finalists performing two songs a cover version and a new song.

David Cook was crowned American Idol Wednesday, his smooth showmanship defeating a favoured young challenger who swept the judges’ praise the previous night.

“This is amazing. Thank you,” Cook said, after bending to the stage floor with emotion when the results were announced.

Defeated was David Archuleta, 17, a fresh-faced balladeer groomed most of his life for the stage by his jazz musician father. Archuleta was widely praised by the judges for slam-dunk performances in the final round.

Cook, 25, who grew up outside Kansas City, Missouri, and most recently worked as a bartender while playing in clubs in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a rocker in the style of one of the show’s most successful runners-up, Chris Daughtry.

He wasn’t even going to audition – he accompanied his brother to the tryouts to support him and a producer talked him into giving it a try.

He wound up in the finals.

Wednesday’s Idol finale, timed to fall on the last night of May ratings sweeps, featured all 12 finalists of TV’s No. 1 show.

Among the parade of stars entertaining: Donna Summer, comedian Jimmy Kimmel (“Hey, I valet parked outside; how much do I tip Sanjaya?”), ZZ Top, OneRepublic, Gladys Knight, Ben Stiller, Carrie Underwood and George Michael.

Wednesday’s show opened with host Ryan Seacrest announcing that the contest wasn’t close – a 56-44 percent split among the 98 million votes cast, exceeding last year’s total by more than 20 million.

But it was widely judged a lacklustre year for the popular talent show.

While it still delivered a blockbuster audience, ratings were down about 8 percent and it lacked strong personalities and breakout talent of previous seasons.

Judge Randy Jackson wouldn’t agree. “This has been one of the strongest years ever,” he said before the winner was announced.

Simon Cowell, who had been unsparing with criticism of both at times, congratulated the two finalists, praising them for taking chances.

“For the first time ever, I don’t care who wins,” Cowell said. “I think you’ve both been terrific.”
