I have been investing for the past several years now… I am a Credit Analyst for a Bank is South Florida. Most of the books are getting good reviews and I wonder why.. Are people placing these reviews related to the Authors? I am glad that I did not buy this book. I rented it at the local library… It’s to basic… I read the section on how to buy bonds and notting good was coverd there.. After reading just that section (which by the was is most important since you dont want to over pay for bonds) I am sending it back to the library.. As long as you buy bonds when interest rates are high and the U.S. economic growth is slowing they are good buys… You will get interest payments and once interest rates start to come down (since the FED will lower rates to provide a soft landing to the economy) you will get a capital gain as well.. I am going to rent another book “The Bond Book” to see if it’s any better than this one.. There is alot information at PIMCO site (FREE) related to how to buy bonds and build a bond investment strategy.. see [...]

Don’t get me wrong – this is a great book. I’d highly recommend it. But I’m sure the author would want you to purchase & read any of his other books on investing. You’ll also find similar stuff in books by Bernstein, Hebner, Ferri, etc. Good stuff.

This book is 2004 the investment book of the year. Its philosophy is based on the principles of modern portolio theory (MPT) and the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). It provides a road map to a long term winning investment strategy. It clearly lays out the case against active management (stock picking and market timing) and for passive management, and it explains why diversification is the winning strategy. Following this road map will make you a better informed and more effective investor. Part 1 provides the evidence why active strategies are called the loser’s game. Part 2 describes how markets really work. The remainder of the book explains how to implement the winning strategy in a way that will meet your ability, willingness and perhaps, most important, your need to take risk. It describes how you can win the investment game through long term investments in such indexes such as the S&P 500 or Wilshire 5000 instead of through the active buying and selling. It is more productive to invest an stay invested. As Warren Buffett said:” We continue to make money when snooring than when active. Also, passive investors as a group earn higher after tax returns than active investors. As Bogle stated: “As the logicians would say, QED. So it is demonstrated”. Digest this book and you will be rewarded accordingly.

The book is not for beginners. If you have some background in investing, I highly recommend this book. I heard the author on a investment radio show and bought a different book whick led me to this book. If you have read Winning the Losers Game by Larry Ellis, this book is similar. What Swedroe does is give specifics regarding portfolio allocation. Something most of the other books I have read are light on or non-existent. This is a book most invesment advisors don’t want you to read, although the author is not against advisors. He gives you information to make sure your advisor is working in your best interest and a way for you to evaluate and work with your advisor. If in doubt, buy it used. The charts in the appendix are worth the price alone, in my opinion.
