  • This is a great book for anyone looking for Uniforms from the American Revolution. The illustrations are beautiful and it complies data from most of the sources out there.

  • It sounds like the experts are up in arms over this brilliantly illustrated volume. Judging from other feedback there are questions about the absolute veracity of some of the uniforms depicted. As this is a scholarly volume I will not quibble with the EXPERTS if there are factual errors, but arguing about facing colors from one year to the next?

As a general research tool I find the book quite satisfactory. Very pleased with it.

  • An expert in-depth reference on the armies of the American Revolution. A must have for modelers, historians and painters of the American Revolution. Lots of uniforms in full color and related facts!

  • When I first saw this book was coming out, I felt excited as there really hasn’t been a comprehensive book on American Revolution uniforms since the bicentennial. However, after looking through this book, I noticed several small and large flaws in facts and illustrations. Several pages are so incredibly inaccurate that it almost appears to be an editing problem. Small errors are almost acceptable with a work this size, but large factual errors are inexcusable.

The authors do not include a list of their sources (Why? I find simple bibliographies are almost more valuable than the text), however it appears that they relied on the same bicentennial age sources to prepare this latest book. Practically all of the old errors seen in the previous books are repeated here, along with far too many erroneous illustrations. It is a shame that new research was not incorporated in this book. For a topic of this magnitude, it would have been better to have authors assigned to specific nationalities with one or two overall editors to check general facts. I almost get the feeling that the editor of this book checked for grammar, but not for substance.

The only high point of this book is the section on the Spanish military and the navies which I have never seen before. Also, I found the sections on artillery helpful and interesting, however the factual problems throughout this book almost negates the value of these interesting sections.

It seems that the authors bit off more than they could chew with this book. I think that the book would have been much better had each section had its own expert author. Also, it is far too bad that new research (including new research on vague but interesting units) was not incorporated. Relying on old and out of date sources ruined an otherwise promising book.

  • If you are interested in the individual uniforms that individual units and soldiers wore in the American War of Independence this is the book for you. Well researched and well illustrated. I recommend.
